With the arrival of summer, Trieste becomes a widespread cultural stage, where squares, theatres, and cultural venues host a rich calendar of events dedicated to both residents and visitors.

Among the most eagerly awaited events in June is Bloomsday, the celebration held every 16 June to commemorate the connection between James Joyce and Trieste. Enthusiasts, scholars, and curious visitors follow in the footsteps of the Irish writer, exploring the places that shaped his experience in the city.

The celebration takes its name from Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses, and is observed around the world on the day on which the events of Joyce’s famous modernist novel unfold. In Trieste, where Joyce lived for more than ten years, Bloomsday takes on a particularly special meaning, transforming the city into a meeting point for readers and enthusiasts from Italy and abroad. It is no coincidence that, in the Julian capital, it is one of the most anticipated events of the month: an opportunity to celebrate the visionary Irish writer and his enduring legacy.

This year, Bloomsday celebrations began as early as Saturday, 13 June, and concluded today, with immersive breakfasts, themed walks, music performances, and book presentations forming part of the Trieste Estate programme. Running from June to August, the festival brings the city to life with performances, music, cinema, theatre, and a wide range of cultural initiatives. Promoted by the Municipality of Trieste, the 2025 edition featured 448 events attended by more than 170,000 people.

These figures reflect the identity of the city: a place capable of celebrating its heritage while continuing to create opportunities for encounters, creativity, and shared experiences.
