Trieste is a literary city—we know it well. From poet Umberto Saba to Irish writer James Joyce, from Italo Svevo to Pia Rimini and Fausta Cialente, many writers have found inspiration and the ideal setting here to shape their stories. But this literary vitality, which continues to this day, certainly does not stop at the city’s boundaries: it extends across the entire region.

From authors from Udine to Pordenonelegge, from the border areas surrounding Gorizia—which have provided fertile ground for stories and narratives—to the Friulian-language poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini, the whole region is characterised by a cultural vibrancy in which literature is one of its most distinctive expressions.

This heritage has now even been featured by Spanish television broadcaster RTVE, whose cultural programme Pàgina Dos dedicated an entire episode to Friuli Venezia Giulia. Presenter Óscar López visited all the regional capitals, interviewing some of today’s leading contemporary authors and exploring the uniqueness of this remarkable territory.
