Event glossary: pop-up store

13 July 2026Originally emerging in the United States and the United Kingdom as a temporary retail concept, the term pop-up store has also become increasingly common in the vocabulary of PCOs (Professional Congress Organizers).
A pop-up store is a temporary retail space open for a limited period—ranging from a few days to several weeks or, in some cases, just over a month. Its appeal lies precisely in its limited lifespan, turning shopping into a unique, time-sensitive experience.
Over the years, the pop-up store has evolved into a powerful marketing and engagement tool. It enables brands to connect with audiences in person, showcase products, attract attention, and create memorable experiences designed to be shared both on-site and online.
For a convention centre, this means much more than simply hosting a retail space. It involves creating a fully-fledged event format, requiring flexible venues, intuitive visitor flows, exhibition areas, fitting spaces, technical support, and careful crowd management from entry through to purchase.
A recent example at the Generali Convention Center Trieste was the Qlhype Private Sale, held from 24 to 27 June. The event transformed Magazzino 27 into the Trieste stop of the fashion e-commerce brand’s tour, bringing exclusive selections, overstock items, and past collections from leading fashion brands to an in-person audience.
